Gatton Grunt set to go in August

LAKE Apex will be the venue for the Gatton Grunt Queensland Duathlon Championships and Fun Run to be held on Sunday August 1.
The Triathlon Queensland sanctioned event is being organised by the Lockyer Valley Regional Council with support from a number of local sponsors and a great day of racing is assured.
It is the second time the event will be held in the Lockyer Valley region and event organisers are again excited about the fantastic venue that Lake Apex offers.
Duathlon is much like triathlon although instead of a swim-bike-run it is run-bike-run. The Gatton Grunt Duathlon will be a 10km run (4 laps of Lake Apex and surrounds), 40km bike ride (heading up Tenthill straight and back, 2 laps) and a further 5km run (2 more laps of Lake Apex and surrounds). There is also a team’s component of the event with businesses encouraged to get their fittest work mates together to take on the corporate challenge.
There is also a 5km fun run which will take place after the Duathlon around 12 noon with locals encouraged to enter for a shot at prize money.
Big prize money will again be on offer for competitors in both the Duathlon and Fun Run with $1,000 for the 1st male and female across the line in the Duathlon and $500 for the 1st male and female in the 5km Fun Run. 2nd in the Duathlon will receive $750 and 3rd $500 while 2nd in the Fun Run will take home $250 and 3rd $100.
Registration for both the Duathlon and the Fun Run is now open and can be done by visiting www.gattongrunt.com.au
There is also a host of other information on the web site including the course layout around Lake Apex.
The Gatton Grunt Duathlon is all about community participation with a 5KM Fun Run to be held again as part of the event.

Flagstone Creek school farewells much loved Mary

Principal of Flagstone State School presents retiring teacher-aid Mary Turner with a farewell gift for her many years of dedicated service.

WELL known Flagstone Creek identity Mrs Mary Turner was farewelled for her more than 35½ years of service to the school community at a special morning tea on Tuesday June 22.
Many former teacher aid’s, former students and friends returned to the Flagstone Creek School to celebrate with the current school staff and students and acknowledge the huge contribution Mary has made to school life.
Mary’s service equates to an amazing 7100 school days where she has worked with five principals, around 15 teachers and over 600 students.
When she began working at Flagstone Creek State School, there were just two buildings, the Library was moved to the school a couple of years later.
Being a very dedicated, loyal and supportive member of staff, Mary has been a great advocate for the school, especially to new families being shown around the school.
Mary has seen many changes to the school over the years particularly in the technology area going from a spirit duplicator, Gestetner ink duplicator to photocopier. She has worked very hard to ensure that the students she was working with had the best chance possible to achieve well.
Mary has accepted change and acquired new skills and kept up-to-date and contributed a great deal within the school environment.
Both Mary and the school staff have expressed the wish that Mary continue as a volunteer – Religious Instruction and Contributing to the 125th Anniversary book for starters.
In his speech Principal David Prestridge said, “ It is impossible to run a school of this size without teacher aides. Mary has made a huge contribution and I thank her for everything she has done and wish her a long, healthy and happy retirement.”
